Starting a conversation about hospice care with someone you love is never easy. It’s emotional, deeply personal, and often avoided—until a crisis forces the issue. But the truth is, talking about hospice early opens the door to comfort, dignity, and choice.

Pick a quiet, private place where your loved one feels safe. Avoid distractions. If appropriate, invite a trusted family member, physician, or spiritual advisor to join. The tone should be gentle, respectful, and centered around your loved one’s needs—not your fears.
Start with empathy. Express your concern, your love, and your desire for their comfort.

Focus on the benefits: pain relief, home visits, emotional support, and 24/7 access to care.
Be patient. Let them share their thoughts, fears, and questions. Some may resist the idea at first. That’s okay. Your role is to plant the seed and be available as they process.
If emotions rise, stay present, not persuasive. Remember, this is a journey—not a single conversation.
